My favorite gadget of the past year – my SSD

Published on February 23, 2012 by in PC Gadgets

Over the past year I’ve purchased an iPad, iPhone, HP Touchpad, iPod touch, new processor/mobo/RAM, cool ceiling fan, exercise bike and Santa brought us a new 50″ TV and PS3.  My favorite “Gadget Dad” purchase over the past year is by far my OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD.

It cost me $620.  Which may seem a lot for a hard drive…because it is.  However, this thing is so fast that I don’t wait for anything on my PC.  If I were to calculate how much I waited for apps to load, reboots and the like with my old hard drive I have no doubt that I could prove that the SSD has paid for itself.

A reboot takes about 15 seconds.  I installed Windows 7 in 7 minutes.  A regular boot is about 6 seconds.  When I go to a website, it loads.  When I start typing for search terms in google, it gives me ideas as fast as I type.

To my surprise, the same drive that I bought for $620 about 6 months ago can now be found on Amazon for $354!!  The 120 GB version is only 169 and I will soon be buying one for my laptop.

If you are looking for that next upgrade to speed up your computer or think you need a new one because yours is too slow, it would be wise to first look at an SSD and the Vertex 3 is a solid choice.  I’ve been using it for 6 months now and haven’t had any problems.  Only fast, new hotness.

The systems I’ve used with this drive are:

nforce 780 SLI, e6600 Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Corsair XMS2 RAM

p8z68 pro gen3, i5 2500k, 16 GB

The feel of my 2nd system is obviously faster since the specs are much better but the increase in performance on both systems with the Vertex 3 was the same.
